Meaning

Mutual attraction is important. If the only biblical advice on seeking a spouse were Proverbs 31:30 (‘Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised’), we might not think that chemistry matters in relationships. And, of course, the important point of the Proverbs passage is that chemistry is not the only thing that matters: character is even more vital. Yet the Song of Songs reminds us that mutual attraction has its own important place. If we cannot honestly say to our spouse on our wedding day that they are unique in our eyes – like a single lily among a world of thorns, or the only apple tree in the whole forest of ordinary trees for us – then we have no business marrying them.

Of course, what seems delightful shade and sweet fruit one day may seem an oppressive shadow and a sour taste the next. One way of keeping the flame burning in our marriages is to affirm repeatedly what it was about the other person that drew us to them uniquely in the first place and that we continue to see in them now. Marriage should not be the end of courtship, but rather should open the door to a constant courtship, in which both husband and wife seek to outdo each other in their expression of genuine appreciation and affection for the other.

For the Christian, whether married or unmarried, there is One who is uniquely beautiful above all others, who invites us to sit in his shade and enjoy the sweet fruit of his love. He is fully deserving of constant affirmation and praise from us. What is truly remarkable, however, is that, although we each really are one among billions of ordinary people, he also treasures us constantly as individuals, delighting in the beauty that he has bestowed upon us as a glorious gift.
